Speaking Volumes through Photography
”The man adjusting his lens to take just the right frame of her suffering might just as well be a predator, another vulture on the scene"
This photograph was taken by Kevin Carter in 1994 while he was in South Africa. This is a disturbing photograph of a Sudanese toddler being stalked by a vulture on her way to a food shelter. The vulture was waiting for her to die, so that it can eat her. Kevin Carter won the Pulitzer Prize for this photograph, as well as many criticisms from people all over the world. Kevin Carter committed suicide 3 months later.
A picture is worth a thousand words; well, this one speaks volumes to me. This photograph literally breaks my heart. It is so powerful, it just shows the dire condition that people in South Africa have to endure EVERY single day of their lives. This picture gave people a true look at what is going on beyond their comfortable lifestyles. This is what kids and many many people have to go through every single day, this is the truth, and it is heart breaking.

Humans of UTSA
"What was the saddest moment of your life?"
"Probably when I found out my Grandfather died when I was about 6"
"How did he die?"
"No one really ever told me.."
"Is there something coming up that you're excited about?"
"I am close to being the first person in my family to graduate with a bachelor's degree."
"If you could give advice to a group of people, what would it be?"
"I always heard the saying, but never really put it into perspective until I heard a Holocaust survivor say: 'even when times get you down, just keep believing in yourself and never give up! You'll never know how far you can go, the things you can do or the lives you can change if you stop believing'"
"Of all the things y'all have gone through together, which experience has taught y'all the most?"
"No matter how much time we spend apart and how different we are, the love that you have for someone is not conditional or rewarded. I love what he and I will become together. He makes me want to be the best that I could ever be. You know you've found true love when you can look at that person and you can tell that they love you without them having to say it."
"What are the challenges of being a gay couple?"
"Having to fit into today's society is a struggle. Not everyone approves of gay marriage but I mean, love is love, so why should it matter if it's with a boy or a girl?"
